EAHS Canned Food Drive Success!
Written by Mayra Sosa, Counselor at Elsie Allen High School
Led by the amazing Mathematics and ASB Leadership Teacher, Mrs. Rosa Maria Martinez, the ASB Leadership class was able to coordinate a safe, socially distanced, Thanksgiving canned food drive supporting the Redwood Empire Food Bank in November of 2020.
When we asked Mrs. Martinez to explain how this idea came to fruition she told the Foundation, “My students decided to do this because they saw this opportunity as a way to give back to our community, and they wanted to help their community members in need.” Given the current pandemic, Mrs. Martinez shared her student’s desire to do something that will help our most vulnerable families — they chose to address food security and to organize this canned food drive-thru effort.
Overall, it was a great turnout and they collected tons of food that was donated to REFB, supporting their efforts to provide meals to our most vulnerable families. The Foundation wants to give a huge shout out and thank Mrs. Martinez, and her students who helped make this event successful: Erick Galvan, Phoebe Lawson, Miranda Vasquez (ASB President), Marisol Chimal, Aaliyah Rodriguez (Sophomore class president), Kia Zanga, Roberto Lopez Leslie Tejeda, Sarah Ruiz, Tara Langley, Maria Ortiz, Vianey Gonzalez and Carlos Penaloza showed up and helped out during the safe, socially distanced drive-through event.
The students did everything to make this canned food drive a huge success. Mrs. Martinez is incredibly proud of her ASB students for stepping up during these challenging times. Thank you ASB leaders — your actions are speaking louder than words, and feeding more in our community. Happy Holidays and keep up the great work!
